Esquilino

Post Office building

The Post Office building in Piazza Dante, opened in 1914, is one of the most important monuments testifying to the complete rebuilding of the Esquiline in the decades following the Unification of Italy. Alongside the residential buildings to accommodate the civil servants of the new government, the urban development plans included a number of public infrastructure projects, whose design involved the most prominent architects of the time. The design of the Post Office building, pompously baptized “Palazzo delle Casse di Risparmio Postali”, as stated in the inscription on the façade, was entrusted to the famous architect Louis Rolland. He created an eclectic building, perfectly harmonizing with the architectural style of the other buildings overlooking Piazza Dante. Following the closure of the post office branch, the building has been allocated to the Ministry of Defence and is currently undergoing radical restoration work.
